Yachad’s Asthma Home Visiting Program and Children’s National Hospital are working together to provide comprehensive asthma care which includes critical home remediation services. Our joint effort is improving the health of families while also improving the quality of affordable housing in rapidly changing neighborhoods.
The program conducts tele-health medical visits and virtual housing inspections using smartphones to identify serious housing issues that trigger asthma attacks. The virtual technology is bringing together health and housing expertise to families where they live. These visits enable Yachad to identify and remediate the hazardous conditions inside the home that are contributing to elevated asthma rates for children in Washington, DC.
In addition to working with homeowners, we also educate landlords making them aware of poor housing conditions and providing instructions on how to make repairs.
Families in our program are experiencing improved health outcomes. Assessments show that the frequency of emergency visits, hospitalizations, and oral steroid courses dramatically decrease in the six months following the virtual visits, compared to the six months prior.
