Our Programs

"Our alliance with the Jewish community (and Yachad) underscores our common interest to build a strong and vital city for everyone. The prophet Isaiah proclaimed that the Jewish people would rebuild what has long been in ruins, building again on the old foundations. Thank you for honoring that prophecy with us."
                                  - Joseph Daniels, Jr., Pastor, Emory United Methodist Church

Yachad provides the Jewish community with the tools to make the prophet Isaiah’s vision a reality. We approach each new endeavor with two goals in mind:

1.) To Revitalize Communities

2.)  To Build meaningful relationships between Jews and the diverse neighborhoods of our extended community

There are many different ways to participate with Yachad.

Sukkot in April:

Collaborating with synagogues is a centerpiece of Yachad’s work. One such example is Sukkot in April. Yachad mobilizes hundreds of Jewish volunteers from area synagogues and Jewish organizations to refurbish the homes of lower-income residents of our community, many of whom are elderly or have disabilities. Sukkot in April, a partnership with Rebuilding Together, Inc., is now the largest Jewish home repair program in the nation. SukkotinApril@yachad-dc.org

Hard Hats and Helping Hand Home Repair:

Yachad's Hard Hats and Helping Hands Home Repair Program (5-H) recruits professional real estate and construction people to volunteer their time, labor and often, materials, to provide even greater assistance to homeowners. The goal is to organize a highly skilled volunteer labor force that provides greatly needed repair services to lower-income homeowners. This work further stabilizes the fragile remaining affordable housing units that desperately need to be preserved. 5H@yachad-dc.org

Mitzvah Party:

Often, when the work of the professionals in the 5-H program is done, Yachad brings in volunteer crews to put the finishing touches on the homes.  Our new Mitzvah Party program provides people celebrating a birthday, anniversary or other simcha, the opportunity to invite a group of friends to paint and make small repairs to a home that's been restored by building professionals as part of the 5-H program. info@yachad-dc.org

Ramp it Up!:

High school students participating in Yachad's Ramp it Up! program broaden their experience and horizons, spending a week in the summer building an access ramp at the home of a lower-income Washington-area resident with disabilities.  The teens learn construction skills, enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from helping someone in need, earn community service hours, and engage in discussions about the causes of poverty and the housing needs and civil rights issues of people with disabilities, as well as the Jewish values that underlie the community's commitment to tikkun olam.

 Faith to Faith Community

             Development Program:

Yachad’s partnerships include neighborhood-based community development organizations that are working in some of the most difficult communities, revitalizing commercial corridors and producing affordable housing. Yachad’s Faith to Faith Community Development Program is one example of a partnership between Yachad and minority churches working to revitalize their neighborhoods where we provide a level of sophisticated assistance that non-profit organizations can rarely afford. Educational Outreach:

Understanding the reasons why the Jewish community has a responsibility and role to play in revitalizing our city’s neighborhoods is another important function of Yachad’s work. Educational Outreach initiatives go beyond panel discussions and lectures, taking people out on bus tours to see for themselves areas of our city that many people only learn about from sensational headlines in local papers. Yachad’s education efforts provide front-line experiences and learning opportunities for participants.  info@yachad-dc.org

Yachad Welcomes Synagogue Partners
In the Fall of 2002, Yachad launched the "Yachad Synagogue Partner" program to involve Washington area synagogues in our year-round work to restore urban neighborhoods throughout the metropolitan area. Yachad is pleased to announce that the growing list of synagogue partners now includes 26 synagogues from D.C., Montgomery and Howard Counties in Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

Synagogue involvement is integral to Yachad’s mission. Synagogue support of Yachad’s Sukkot in April Home Repair Program has made it the largest Jewish sponsored home repair program in the nation. Yachad Synagogue Partners are investors and stakeholders in bricks and mortar efforts to rebuild housing and commercial districts in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the metropolitan area. Synagogue Partners take pride and real ownership in the difference they can make to dramatically change a home, a city block, an entire neighborhood.
