Yesterday was a day that Loretta and her family of three children will never forget. It was the day that a group of 12 volunteers headed into their Trinidad row house and made the repairs they have desperately needed since Loretta was diagnosed with Cancer and needed to take a medical leave from her job at Sibley Hospital. The volunteers were all experienced contracting professionals working for JBG and the project was a Mitzvah Party sponsored by The JBG Companies as part of their Days of Giving. Launched in 2010, the annual Days of Giving community service campaign provides employees paid time off to participate in a coordinated volunteer effort. JBG firmly believes that volunteers gain from the experience of giving back just as much as the charities and their clients benefit from the community service. Sam Barrow, JBG’s volunteer leader said, “We had a fantastic day today! All on the team showed up and worked hard. Loretta was so appreciative of the work completed.” If you or your company would like to show how much you care, please contact Yachad about doing your own project.

Wilson High School student, Sofie Heffernan, is a true inspiration.
In two months, she raised $2500 by asking friends and family to support her mission to repair the home of a neighbor in need. The money she raised went to fund a Yachad Mitzvah Party. Her Mitzvah Party took place on Sunday at the home of Ms. Vailes in Southeast DC. Sofie and her friends and family worked to paint the exterior of the bungalow, do much needed landscaping, and other handyman repairs. Ms. Vailes also received brand new floor installations in three rooms in her home as well as new handrails and grab bars, sponsored by Yachad’s grant from the National Fair Housing Alliance.
Ms. Vailes could not be happier. She reported to Yachad staff the next day, “I loved all of the volunteers. I had spoken with Sofie on the phone before I met her and as soon as I saw her for the first time, I knew it was her. We just had a connection.” And it’s that connection that makes Yachad’s projects truly wonderful.
Thanks to Sofie, her family and friends, Robin Renner, our Construction Manager, Richard Feldman of Feldwood Construction, Ms. Vailes, and the National Fair Housing Alliance.
