Fit for a King…and a Wheelchair (from the outside in)!

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

As you may remember, Yachad has been working up at the 2nd Street Coop in the Ft. Totten neighborhood for the last year. We started installing ramps through the Ramp it Up! program and then again for a Mitzvah Party with Adat Shalom. The ramps made 6 units accessible from the outside. Now, with a grant from National Fair Housing Alliance, we are working to make these six units accessible from the inside as well. Jose Lopez Enterprises is doing beautiful work, renovating the bathrooms, doorways and kitchens. See the pictures below. Once the units are done, they will be made available for affordable rent for disabled DC residents.

Come help us paint the units on Memorial Day (May 30th) through our We the People Federal Holiday Program. Sign up now!

Milestone’s Work Day Was a Real Gem

Monday, May 9th, 2011

As written about in our last blog, Milestone Advisors worked hard to repair and fund the home of Ms. Tabatha McNeil this past Friday at their Mitzvah Party. Before they went off to celebrate their successful 10 years in business, they wanted to give back in a big way. They did just that. Check out the photos and videos from Friday’s work day and check back later this week for before and after shots of the McNeil house thanks to the Milestone team.

Milestone Helps a Northeast Family Reach Their Milestone

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Milestone Advisors, LLC (“Milestone”) is is a FINRA licensed broker/dealer headquartered in Washington, DC. Two months ago they reached out to YACHAD in hopes of being able to bring their employees together to volunteer in the community. Milestone was not only willing to bring in volunteers to help repair a home, but they also were willing to fund the repairs. Through YACHAD’s Mitzvah Party program, we matched them up with Ms. Tabatha McNeil of the Trinidad neighborhood who has been waiting for her home to be repaired for nearly a year. Now, with this generous grant and helping hands, Ms. McNeil and her two children will have a repaired roof, working electricity, floor under their feet and fresh paint on their walls. Milestone is gathering tomorrow morning to help the McNeils get back on track and stay in their home.

Here are some before pictures of the home as well as a few touching words from Ms. McNeil. We’ll be posting the after pictures on Monday morning so check back then!

If We Build It…

Most young professionals were probably sleeping when Jason Kastner was driving to Academy of Hope in the Anacostia neighborhood of DC this past Sunday. But Jason wasn’t alone. He and about 15 of his young professional friends were all heading over to help Yachad transform a storage room into two beautiful classrooms to be used by partnering nonprofit, Academy of Hope. “Academy of Hope has been looking to expand our adult education program for the last year but haven’t had the classrooms to do it,” says AOH’s Program Director, Daquanna Harrison. Thanks to Yachad, Jason and his friends, they will be able to grow. The photos tell the rest of the story as the space was transformed over the 6 hours of work.
