Mitzvah Project

What is a Yachad Mitzvah Project:

Yachad has many programs to choose from, but all of them work toward the same mission: repairing affordable housing, and sustaining communities.  The Mitzvah Project is designed to offer a group of volunteers (friends, student groups, congregants, etc.) a chance to have a hands on experience, repairing a lower-income homeowner’s house.  The reason for the group to come together could be for a simcha-(in which case we call it a Mitzvah Party) or just because they want to give back to the community.  This is a custom fit program that allows the group to work with Yachad and create a project that will work best for their time restraints, amount and kind of work abilities, and money to give.

The group picks one of two options based on what is possible:

Option 1:  The group supplies a House Captain:

This option is of great value for a group that has very limited funds to participate in a project but can supply a contractor/House Captain to oversee the project, do the prep work and organize volunteers during the work day/s.  This person must be skilled in home repairs such as carpentry, house painting, and electrical work.  It is a benefit if they are licensed and bonded but not absolutely necessary.  The House Captain must work with the homeowner in communicating what repairs can be done with the budget-that was approved by the group.  If prep work needs to be done on the home before the volunteers arrive, the House Captain is responsible for this.  The House Captain is also responsible for obtaining materials. The group will be responsible for the cost of the materials.

Option 2:  Yachad supplies a House Captain:

This option is of great value to groups who can’t supply a skilled person to oversee everyone. In exchange for an organizational fee, Yachad will supply a House Captain that will oversee the repairs, help the volunteers organize, be on-site through out the project, and prep the house before the volunteers are there for any work that needs to be completed.  Yachad will be responsible for obtaining the supplies. The group will be responsible for the cost-depending on a budget they decide on.

Cost:

Cost can vary.

Option 1: Yachad charges a flat fee of $500 which covers the administrative fees.  The house captain and the group is responsible for the cost and securing their own materials.   Generally, the cost for materials averages between $500 and $2,000 depending on the work load.

Option 2: Yachad charges a fee of $1000* which covers the cost of the contractor’s time and administrative fees.  Although not responsible for obtaining the supplies, the group is responsible for the cost, which, depending on the work load, is between $500-$2,000.
